Our physicians are always interested in improved medical treatments – those that provide maximum benefit and minimum risk to you, their patients.  All improvements in medicine depend on research into new investigational drugs and devices, as well as studying the best use of current treatments.  Medical research is strictly regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and conducted in part with rigorous studies (clinical research studies) at many sites.  Heartland is a site for clinical research studies related to cardiovascular medicine, and some of our patients have formally agreed to participate in these studies.  Our active clinical studies include:

  • ENGAGE: to study the effectiveness and safety of a new investigational oral blood thinner used in some individuals with irregular heart rhythm (atrial fibrillation)
  • DAPT: to study how long individuals with coronary stents should stay on already approved anti-platelet medications
  • ELIXA: to study if an investigational anti-diabetes medication will prevent future cardiovascular events in diabetics who have already had a cardiovascular event such as myocardial infarction (heart attack) or unstable angina.

The outcome of these studies may influence future patient care. Our physicians and study participants are making an important personal contribution to medical knowledge and progress. For more information, contact Heartland Cardiovascular Center at 815-729-3280, ext. 3300. In addition to the ‘hands on’ clinical studies, Heartland Education Research Foundation provides educational opportunities to the medical and nursing professions and the community.
